Starting relationships in both online dating (with the prettiest girls) and offline dating scenes is tricky, nowadays. Long ago, it was understood that when a woman said yes to a man, she became an officer. These days, though, it’s a little trickier. A man and a woman could start acting like a couple without even defining the relationship (DTR). How do you handle the DTR question without making your partner uncomfortable?
Treat the DTR question in a way that does not ruin the potential relationship
Asking the DTR question is tricky. Whether you want to ask or not, the timing is right. Aside from the weather, here are some tips to keep in mind:
1. Don’t be scared
When they ask you this question or your heart asks you to do it, the best thing you can do is calm down. Don’t act on impulse because you can repent. Start with a calm head so you know exactly how to handle the situation.
2. Set boundaries yourself
If you are the one who wants to define the relationship, give your partner a period of time. He or she can respond in a week or even a month. The same thing happens when you give the answer. Tell your partner that you will be thinking about the time period you have set.
3. Explore reluctance
If your partner is not yet ready to be an officer, talk about their reluctance. Is it from past wounds? Is it for fear of compromise? Whatever the reason, be prepared for it.
4. Consider cooling off
Once you’ve had enough time for your partner to think about the DTR question and still haven’t answered, consider cooling off. It might be good for you and your partner to think about being an officer.
When you feel it’s the right time to ask the DTR question, go ahead. However, give your partner time to respond. If you are the one who has to answer the question, you would also want some time. Be honest and patient, but when all else fails, it’s time to dump her and move on. For more dating tips, read other blog posts.
