In a recent blog post, we shared our Dating Security Policy Book, which has the pros and cons of secure dating, whether online, through matchmaking, or organically.
A recent Forbes article found that “The three most common problem areas, according to the research, were:
- People lying and misrepresenting
- People who set up spam accounts or engage in other illicit behavior and
- People who receive uninvited sexually explicit messages and images “.
Some of these may seem obvious if you have ever experienced these situations first hand. Or you may be one of the many who downloaded an app during the pandemic to simply connect with other life forms. Either way, we want this to be your reminder to always be aware of the uncertainties on the Internet.
Dating security came to light in the recent documentary The Tinder Swindler
Ranked in the Top 10 on Netflix, The Tinder Swindler is a new documentary that has received a lot of traction around the search for Simon Leviev and his other aliases. Now known as the Tinder Swindler, (incoming spoiler alert) Simon used the app to lure women with his high-flying, luxurious lifestyle.
Claiming to be the “prince of diamonds,” Simon dragged the women with private jets, caviar, bouquets, and attention. Once he gained the trust of his victims, he would establish lines of credit and loans in his name. finally leaving women responsible for their debt.
In 2019, Leviev was sentenced to 15 months in prison after being swindled by one of his “girlfriends” who realized his plan. He was released after only 5 months in Israeli prison and his current location has not been determined.
As matchmaking experts, our goal is to equip you with the tools you need for the security and success of dating. In the right conditions and with good intentions, Tinder is still a great platform to meet singles and even has the potential to form meaningful relationships. Take it from Cecilie Fjellhoy, a victim of Leviev, and she continues to use the app to find love: “Tinder has nothing to do with this: I went back to Tinder immediately.”
It is unfortunate that some dating applications designed to create meaningful connections are sometimes mismanaged by some users. While this is an extreme case, it does bring to light the drawbacks of using dating platforms.
